The Challenge: Engineering Comfort and Performance in All Conditions

As outdoor activities become more demanding, so do user requirements. The challenge for EVOC was clear: develop a lightweight, ergonomic backpack that delivers peak comfort, ventilation, and protection in all terrains and weather conditions.

Standard materials and conventional manufacturing couldn’t deliver the desired blend of performance, adaptability, and sustainability. A more advanced solution was required: one that could rethink the very structure of how backpacks are made.

The Solution: Introducing the ALLRIDE 3D WP 16

The ALLRIDE 3D WP 16 is EVOC’s most versatile backpack to date, designed for cyclists, hikers, and everyday adventurers alike. With a suite of thoughtful features and cutting-edge design, it’s not just a backpack—it’s a gear revolution.

  • 3D AIR PAD SYSTEM with 360° Ventilation: Six 3D-printed back pads developed using additive manufacturing provide a custom grid structure that enables full back airflow, even during intense activity.

  • Ergonomic Fit: Seamless shoulder straps and hip wings ensure optimal weight distribution.

The Innovation: Carbon 3D Printing with OECHSLER

In collaboration with manufacturing partner OECHSLER, EVOC redefined backpack ergonomics using Carbon Digital Light Synthesis (Carbon DLS) 3D printing. This advanced form of additive manufacturing allowed for:

  • Improved Sustainability: A sustainable production method with 40% bio-based materials
  • Precision Engineering: Lattice design for the back pads allows for specific zones of cushioning and support built directly into the pads
  • Rapid Prototyping: Enables efficient testing and refinement of back pad designs

In addition to the customizable cushioning, the 3D-printed pads also offer increased airflow. According to tests conducted by OECHSLER, lattice designs have shown a 3°C lower temperature around the wearer’s back than backpacks with traditional foam pads. This passive ventilation, combined with the ability to create customizable zones of varying compression, made additive manufacturing the right option for EVOC.

Within six weeks of the project kickoff, the first design iterations had been printed. After EVOC settled on the pad design, OECHSLER optimized the pad size for printing to maximize the number of pads that could be printed at one time.
